Your security camera is a crimefighter!

Did you know your security camera might help solve a crime against your neighbor?  Most camera systems are always recording, while some only react to motion.  It’s possible that YOUR camera caught the guys who just broke into your neighbor’s home and crossed your yard to escape.

Registering your security cameras allows Pearland PD to know where cameras are near a crime scene that may have valuable footage of the perpetrators.  You can do your part to fight crime by registering your security cameras here:  https://legacy.crimereports.com/camera_registration#/

EDIT: This includes non-traditional security cameras, such as the newer video doorbells such as those offered by Ring.com.  In fact, footage from these video doorbells has been used to solve some recent Pearland area crimes.

Ring.com Products Group Buy Opportunity

A good safety investment for your home is a video doorbell.  These devices allow you to see and talk to someone at your door over your smartphone from anywhere.  Depending on the device and your choice of service, the device may also be able to detect motion and record activity for viewing later.

One of the more robust and well-developed of these is the Ring.com doorbell.  Ring has also recently come out with an entire suite of products, including security cameras.  One of our SCR residents, Jonathan Espinosa, has contacted Ring.com about creating a group buy opportunity for SCR residents.  See Jonathan’s message below.  If you are interested in being notified about the group purchase opportunity (tentatively scheduled for February 18th), email president@scrwatch.org with the subject “Ring Doorbell Group Buy” and we’ll email you with details once the opportunity is finalized.  **If you have already replied to Jonathan’s post on either of the Facebook groups, there is no need to contact us here.**

From Jonathan:

Neighbors!!! Ring Doorbell: $50 off – So after so much talk/interest about Ring Doorbells, I started thinking of getting one. I remembered Costco had it for sale with a $40 discount, but the time I decided, it was back to original price. So, I called the corporate office and said I was interested along with others, but felt we needed a group price to really get buy in. After much discussion, Ring is willing to send a corporate account manager from Santa Monica,CA, to show us all the products, answer questions, suggest different products based on individual needs(meeting details TBD). They would come out at their own expense, provide drinks and snacks, along with a raffle prize for attendees. If we get enough interest as a community.

With that, I am polling the community to see who would like to purchase the Ring Doorbell(or some of their other products), at a $50 discount. We would also get a FREE solar security sign($50 value), with purchase of Doorbell.

Take a look at the pricing sheet attached… Can you all comment if you would find this beneficial and be interested in attending a meet with Ring?

Block Captains Needed!!!

The key person in any Neighborhood Watch group is the Block Captain. This person is an integral component to keeping the block actively involved in crime prevention efforts as well as the important process of information exchange between neighbors.

We are looking for additional “block captains” to improve communications among SCR residents and help maximize the results of our programs and community events. The Block Captain duties are still being developed with input from the actual volunteers who agree to serve. Generally, the following duties exist:

  1. Develop a neighborhood communication system to distribute vital information to neighbors pertaining to criminal activity and other concerns that develop in the area. This can be a periodic newsletter, telephone tree, and/or a one-page notice that can be quickly distributed.
  2. You are encouraged to arrange for your group to meet socially at least twice per year to exchange information and renew relationships as well as to get acquainted with new neighbors. People who communicate regularly will care more about each other and be more willing to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior. The annual National Night Out (NNO) celebration is one example that will bring your neighbors together.
  3. Encourage neighbors to advise you concerning criminal activity. It is the victim’s responsibility to contact the police. However, you can keep a record of break-ins, vandalism, graffiti, and/or any activity that becomes a concern for you and your neighbors. Provide this type of information to neighbors at your next block meeting.

Your position as a Block Captain does not give you any law enforcement authority. You are simply the person who facilitates the unity of the group, distributes information, and coordinates activities. The job you are doing is important and appreciated by law enforcement, but it carries no authority.

The following neighborhoods are still in need of one or more block captains:

Homeowner shot in Mallard’s Landing

  • Posted by Watcher in Alerts on January 23rd, 2017

Shortly after 7pm Sunday evening January 22nd, a homeowner was shot and killed at his residence on Windy Shores Drive in the Mallard’s Landing section of Shadow Creek Ranch.  Pearland Police are investigating, but there are no concrete details at this time.  The victim was the only person home at the time.  PPD has indicated that the circumstances lead them to believe this was NOT a random event, but instead a targeted action.  The victim has been identified as Don Weido, who was well-known and liked in the community, and active as a Cub Scout leader and Little League coach.  We ask that everyone keep his family and friends in their thoughts and prayers at this time.

Although this incident appears to be a targeted action and not random, we encourage all residents to follow some simple safety measures:

  1.  Turn on your exterior lights after dark.  Many of us have installed simple timers available from Home Depot or Amazon that turn our porch, garage, and patio lights on at sunset and off at sunrise.  Criminals don’t like well-lit homes and would prefer to go to another home where they can work in the dark.
  2. If you have an alarm system, USE IT!  Set your alarm at all times.  The only time mine is off is when I’m resetting it to leave the house or turning it off briefly when coming home.  Otherwise it’s always on.
  3. Consider the use of a video doorbell system (such as the Ring.com doorbell) and/or security cameras (the Arlo system is popular and easy to install).  Both allow you to view your surroundings from anywhere, and also allow you to see (and in some cases interact with) who’s at the door while staying safely away from the doorway.  (One SCR resident is working on a group discounted purchase for the Ring products).
  4. Be aware of your surroundings; don’t open your door to unknown persons without seeing ID and confirming their reason for being at your house.
  5. Defend your home – we can’t tell you how to do that.  Some of you are comfortable owning firearms and using them for personal defense.  Others may prefer to have guard dogs, which others will have both.  But please consider how you would defend yourself if someone broke into your home.
  6. Harden your home.  There are too many facets to list here, but we’ll add a post detailing various things to do in this regard later today or tomorrow.
  7. Meet your neighbors – get to know them.  Host a block party to learn who your neighbors are, what they do, what their family is like, etc.  Be a little “nosy” so that you can keep an eye out for your friends and neighbors.
  8. Consider taking self defense classes. The Shadow Creek Ranch Self Defense classes begin again Tuesday January 24th at 7pm at the Emerald Bay Clubhouse.  Master Ben Mitchell is an excellent instructor and SCR resident who wants to educate residents on simple basic motions to defend themselves in real-life situations.  The mutli-class course costs $20.
  9. Join our Neighborhood Watch group and learn more about safety and security.  Participate in patrols to watch our for your home and your neighbors.
  10. Above all, if you see something unusual, call the Pearland PD non-emergency number at 281-997-4100.  If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.

I’ll update the post as more information is made public.
